And yet Preston beat out Reading to be officially named a City. Clearly the criteria for "city" need updating, as "at least one Borders and at least one Starbucks" would seem to be a no-brainer.


Well, Preston was named a city in 2002 and only got it Borders and Starbucks in 2005. I don't think we can necessarily assume the second set of events was caused by the first.

Given that there are only so many towns of the requisite size in the UK, I am sure it is only a matter of time before Reading is officially citified. I'm not sure the feelgood factor outweighs the cost to the Council Taxpayers in rebranding wheelie bins.


Borders *and* Waterstones ?!

In Harlow the closest thing to a bookshop is WH Smiths.

Sometimes I expect Amazon to stop delivering to any address in CM17.


Ah, Harlow - the shining star of Western Essex. How I grew to loathe the Harvey Centre.


That was rather my thought. Harlow is in... *Essex*.
